Timing matters. In most states that use HealthCare.gov, the yearly Marketplace Open Enrollment period runs from November 1 through January 15, and enrolling by December 15 is typically the deadline for coverage to start January 1.
If you miss Open Enrollment, you may still be able to enroll if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (for example, losing coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby). Medicaid and CHIP are different: you can apply any time of year.
This page reflects publicly available guidance as of July 2026. Rules can vary by state and by plan type, so when you're close to enrolling, confirm details with your Marketplace, insurer, or a licensed professional.
